Let God Give You What You Need

“It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows; for so He gives His beloved sleep.” (Psalm 127:2).

The preceding bible verse is a powerful one that brings us true rest.  We must never lose sight of the truth…God is our provider, we are not our own, and God delights to give us what we need.  The preceding verse demonstrates that God gives to His beloved even while they are sleeping so in vain people rise early to provide for themselves and sit up late worried about how to make ends meet, because God gives to His own. We see this throughout the entire bible, but two examples the Lord showed me that really blessed me, which I will share with you.

God gave Adam a wife (which marriage has no record of divorcing) while he was sleeping…not while he was toiling trying to give himself a spouse  (Genesis 2:21-22).  Another example was King Solomon, who God gave freely wisdom, and wealth beyond measure, when he was sleeping.  (See 1 Kings 4).  What did the Lord show me with these two examples?  If you are sleeping, you are not busy trying to save yourself.  Instead you are in a resting, and allowing God to supply your needs.  God has shown me one of the main reasons that people are not receiving from God what He longs to give them is because they are busy trying to give it to themselves.  That should not be so.  God’s part is to give to His beloved (that’s us), and our part is to trust God to give it and thankfully receive it when He does!

Let me explain a bit more. Imagine that our relationship with God (for illustrative purposes) is like a movie.  In a movie everyone has his or her role to play.  In our movie, God is the provider; and you and I are the receivers.  And just like a movie, when everyone assumes his or her role, it goes well…the same is true for us in this movie.  When we allow God to be God, and we realize we are not God and without Him we can do nothing; the movie goes well. However, imagine a movie where one actress keeps reading lines from another actor’s role…that movie would be chaos and it’s production/conclusion delayed, because any director with any wisdom is going to stop the actress (Cut!) and make her start all over again…make her take her place and play her role, because only when she does is the movie a success.  When we try to save ourselves, provide for ourselves, and protect ourselves, we are behaving like the misguided actress and delaying the conclusion of the hit film.  Beloved, let’s come out of that vicious cycle of defeat and let God do what He does best…provide for His own!  Let our prayer today be that God deliver us from trying to play His part, and bless us to excel in our own…be grateful receivers of all God has done, will do, and is doing in Jesus name!

“But see first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you.”  (Matthew 6:33).
