Selfishness Is a Setup (Part 6)

In this episode of The One Thing That’s Needful Podcast, Dr. Siohvaughn Funches-Dunnom continues her teaching on why selfishness is a trap that keeps believers from walking in the fullness of God’s design. She emphasizes that love is not selfish but gives, and that Christians are called to reflect Christ by serving others, sowing seeds, and trusting God to multiply what is given. The message is rooted in the truth that what we do for others is never wasted, because in God’s kingdom generosity always comes back in greater measure.

To illustrate that principle, she revisits the story of Mordecai and Esther, showing how one act of faithfulness and generosity helped position an entire nation for deliverance. Mordecai’s decision to save the king’s life, even after personal loss and hardship, later became part of God’s larger rescue plan for the Jews when Haman’s plot was reversed. The lesson is that unselfish obedience can have consequences far beyond what we can see in the moment.

She then turns to the story of the Shunammite woman in 2 Kings 4, who repeatedly blessed Elisha with food and even made a room for him in her home. Her generosity came from a sincere heart, and God honored it by giving her the son she had long desired. But when tragedy struck and the child died, she refused to speak defeat and went back to the same prophet, declaring, “It is well,” showing the power of guarding your confession in crisis.

The episode closes with a strong reminder that the ground you sow on matters, and that believers should keep giving even when they are in need themselves. The Shunammite woman’s seed of hospitality became the channel for a miracle, and her faith in God was restored through the raising of her son. Dr. Funches-Dunnom leaves listeners with the encouragement that love gives, selfishness destroys, and God can turn faithful giving into lasting testimony.
