Welcome to The One Thing That’s Needful—a space where we gather at the feet of Jesus to hear His Word and receive the faith that comes by hearing. In a world filled with uncertainty, distractions, and delay, God continually reminds His children of a timeless truth: He has not changed His mind.
In the New Covenant of grace, Christ has already finished the work. Every promise God made is fulfilled in Him, and we receive those promises not by striving, but by believing. Scripture tells us that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of Christ. There is truly only one thing needful for the believer—to sit, listen, and receive.

God Is Not a Man That He Should Lie

Our anchor scripture for this series comes from Numbers 23:19:
“God is not a man, so He does not lie. He is not human, so He does not change His mind. Has He ever spoken and failed to act? Has He ever promised and not carried it through?”
These questions are rhetorical because the answer is clear—God never fails. He does not change His mind about who He is, what He has spoken, or what He has promised you. Even when circumstances suggest otherwise, heaven’s verdict remains unchanged.
God’s heart has always been for His children to inherit everything He has promised. Those promises came at an immeasurable cost—the life, suffering, and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. He was made a curse so that we could be blessed. Heaven was, in a sense, emptied so that we could be filled.
When the Enemy Can’t Change God’s Mind, He Tries to Change Yours
The enemy knows something very important: he cannot get God to change His mind. So instead, he works tirelessly to get us to doubt—using discouragement, delay, opposition, and even people close to us.
This is why the story of David is so powerful in this series. David received a massive promise from God—to be king of Israel. That promise pointed prophetically to Jesus Christ Himself. Yet David faced relentless opposition, betrayal, and seasons that looked nothing like God’s promise.
Still, David refused to believe the lie that God had changed His mind.
And because he didn’t give up, he won.
Focus Determines Faith: David, Goliath, and the Power of Perspective

When David arrived at the battlefield, everyone saw the same giant—Goliath. They heard the same threats. Yet their responses were radically different.
The army of Israel, including David’s own brothers and King Saul, focused on natural facts:
- Goliath’s size
- His armor
- His military experience
- David’s youth and lack of credentials
That focus produced fear and paralysis.
David, however, fixed his focus on God.
He never called Goliath a giant. He called him an uncircumcised Philistine—a man outside of covenant. David understood that the battle did not belong to the strongest warrior, but to the covenant-keeping God who had never lost a fight.
The principle remains true today. Doctor’s reports, bank balances, timelines, and opposition may speak loudly—but none of them are greater than Almighty God.
Looking Back to Move Forward
One of the most powerful revelations in this message is this:
sometimes you must look back in order to move forward.
Before David stepped onto the battlefield, he remembered what God had already done. He recalled defeating the lion and the bear—not by his own strength, but by God’s delivering power.
That remembrance fueled his faith.
Scripture echoes this principle again in Deuteronomy 7:17–19, where God instructs His people to remember past deliverance before facing new battles. Reflection builds confidence. Testimony strengthens faith.
God is the same:
- Yesterday — when He delivered you
- Today — in the battle you’re facing now
- Forever — in every future challenge
He has not changed His mind.
The Same God Still Delivers
Every giant—past, present, or future—falls the same way: by faith in the unchanging God.
Delay does not mean denial. Opposition does not mean abandonment. Silence does not mean God has forgotten. The promise still stands.
When we fix our focus on the Father, refuse the enemy’s lies, and remember what God has already done, we position ourselves to inherit everything He has promised.
