Rightly Dividing the Covenants

“Rightly divide the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15)slide-02

God is so rich in mercy, and has the biggest heart to give (Ephesians 2:4-5).  It is truly His delight to give us the Kingdom (Luke 12:32). There are people, however, who yet to receive so many of God’s free gifts.  A large reason why is lack of knowledge.  Lack of knowledge has serious consequences.  The bible says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6).  I can assure you God doesn’t want any of His children destroyed (2 Peter 3:9).  That’s the purpose behind today’s message.  God wants to impart some more godly knowledge in us, so that we are not only far from destruction, but so we also are positioned to receive all He has for us.

Now, the bible is filled with knowledge but the focus of todays’ message will be rightly dividing the old covenant from the new covenant in the bible.  When you do this, you know the heart of God and His promises for us as new covenant believers in Christ Jesus.  So let’s dive right in!

The old covenant of law, given via Moses, was a system of earning God’s blessings (John 1:17).  God entered into a contract so to speak with mankind, and when man did His part (followed God’s laws); God did His, and blessed them beyond measure. Because of the weakness of man’s flesh, however, and the fact that no man can be justified by the law, man failed again and again, and thus, forfeited his inheritance of blessings (Galatians 2:16 & Romans 3:20).  By contrast, under the new covenant, which came by Jesus Christ, Jesus fulfilled all the righteous requirements of the law for us (see Romans 8:4), and rose from the dead, which made us righteous before God (Romans 4:25).  Jesus made us heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Himself, so that all of God’s blessings are rightfully yours and mine! Hallelujah!!!  Jesus also became a curse for us so that no more curses from breaking the law would come on us…all of us who believe in Jesus! (Galatians 3:13). This is very simple, but incredibly powerful.  We are no longer under the old covenant of law!  We are under the new covenant of grace through faith in Jesus (Ephesians 2:8).

In this new covenant, Jesus did it all for us, and when He, who cannot lie, finished everything to reconcile mankind to God forever, make us righteous before God and qualify us for every promise from God in the entire bible; He proclaimed: It is finished!  People of God, it is finished!  The only thing to do in this new covenant is to believe, because when you believe, you receive every promise Jesus died and rose to give you freely.  Beloved, it is yours…declare with me…”Daddy God thank you for Jesus, and I receive all He died and rose from the dead to provide for me in Jesus name!”

“It is finished!”  (See, John 19:28-30)
