Trusting God When the Promise Feels Delayed
In this episode of The One Thing That’s Needful Podcast, Dr. Siohvaughn L. Funches-Dunnom continues her powerful series titled “If You Don’t Have It, You Don’t Need It.” Throughout this series, she reminds believers of a life-changing truth found in the Word of God: our Heavenly Father has already promised to supply every need according to His riches in glory through Christ Jesus.
This truth challenges the way we often view difficult circumstances. When life presents obstacles, delays, or situations that appear impossible, our natural reasoning tells us we are missing something essential. We may believe we lack the right resources, connections, opportunities, or timing.
But the promise of Scripture teaches something entirely different.

Trusting God When the Promise Feels Delayed
Barrenness is one of the most painful experiences a person can face. It represents emptiness, waiting, and sometimes deep disappointment. In Scripture, barrenness often symbolized more than the inability to bear children—it represented situations where life felt stuck, dreams seemed impossible, and hope appeared to fade.
Yet throughout the Bible, God repeatedly shows us that barrenness is never the end of the story when He is involved.
One of the most powerful examples of this truth is found in the life of Hannah.
Her story teaches us something profound about faith, prayer, and trusting God even when circumstances suggest that nothing will ever change.
When Life Feels Empty

Hannah’s story begins in 1 Samuel 1, where we are introduced to a woman who loved God deeply but carried a heavy burden. Hannah was unable to have children, and in her culture this was not only painful—it was often viewed as shameful.
To make matters worse, she endured constant provocation from Peninnah, the other wife of her husband Elkanah, who had many children.
The Bible tells us that year after year Hannah wept and refused to eat because of the anguish in her heart.
Her situation seemed impossible.
But what makes Hannah remarkable is how she responded to her pain.
Instead of becoming bitter toward God, Hannah turned toward Him.
Hannah’s Prayer: Taking Pain to God
When Hannah went to the temple in Shiloh, she poured out her heart before the Lord.
Scripture says:
“She was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the Lord, and wept sore.”
—1 Samuel 1:10
This wasn’t a casual prayer.
It was the prayer of someone who had reached the end of her own strength.
Hannah didn’t try to hide her emotions from God. She brought her grief, disappointment, and longing directly to Him.
And in that moment, something powerful happened.
God saw her.
God heard her.
And God responded.
Faith Before the Miracle

One of the most beautiful parts of Hannah’s story is that her faith appeared before the answer did.
After praying, Hannah rose from the temple, and the Bible says something remarkable:
“Her face was no longer sad.”
—1 Samuel 1:18
Nothing had changed in her circumstances yet.
She was still barren.
But something had changed in her heart.
She had placed her situation in God’s hands.
This is what faith often looks like. It’s not pretending the problem doesn’t exist—it’s trusting God with it.
God Turns Barrenness Into Blessing
In God’s perfect timing, Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son named Samuel.
Samuel would grow up to become one of Israel’s greatest prophets, anointing both King Saul and King David.
Think about that.
The child that came from Hannah’s season of barrenness would play a major role in shaping the future of Israel.
What looked like a delay was actually preparation for something greater than Hannah could imagine.
What Hannah’s Story Teaches Us Today
Hannah’s story reminds us of several powerful truths about walking with God.
1. God Sees Your Pain
Nothing escapes God’s attention. The things that cause you to weep are not invisible to Him.
2. Prayer Is Powerful
Hannah’s breakthrough began when she took her burden to God instead of carrying it alone.
3. Faith Can Exist Before the Miracle
Sometimes the greatest victory happens in our hearts before we ever see it in our circumstances.
4. God Can Turn Emptiness Into Purpose
What looks like barrenness today may become the birthplace of tomorrow’s blessing.
Trusting God in Your Waiting Season

Many people today are facing their own versions of barrenness.
It may not be physical infertility.
It may look like:
- A dream that hasn’t come to pass
- A door that won’t open
- A season of waiting that feels longer than expected
- Prayers that seem unanswered
But Hannah’s story reminds us that God specializes in turning impossible situations into testimonies.
Just as He did for Hannah, He is able to work in ways we cannot yet see.
The God Who Answers
Hannah’s life stands as a testimony that God hears the cries of His people.
Her barrenness was not the end of her story.
And if you are walking through a season that feels empty or delayed, it may not be the end of yours either.
God is still the same today.
He still hears.
He still answers.
And He still turns waiting seasons into powerful testimonies of His faithfulness.
Reflection Question
What area of your life feels like “barrenness” right now—and how can you bring it honestly before God the way Hannah did?
If this message encouraged you, consider sharing it with someone who may need a reminder that God has not forgotten them.
And remember, sometimes the greatest miracles begin in seasons of waiting.
